“When you hear about all those African brothers and sisters that lose their lives at sea to make to Europe, it scares you.” A female migrant from Côte d’Ivoire

Drivers

“I come from a very poor family in Côte d’Ivoire and I didn’t have the chance to go to school. My parents didn’t have enough money and with my brothers and sisters we all started doing small jobs at an early age. One of my friends who is my neighbor at home came to Tunisia and started working here. She said it was not easy but after a while she managed to have a job and started to earn her life here. She encouraged me to come, it’s been three years now that she lives here.”

Decision-making

“One day I decided that I will do the same and come here. I have never thought of Tunisia. When I used to dream of a better life I was always thinking of Europe, but I knew that although it was not impossible to reach Europe, it was not easy and very risky. When you hear about all those African brothers and sisters that lose their lives at sea to make to Europe, it scares you.”

 Making it Work

“I was working in my country and I gathered the money I needed to pay my ticket. I came here a year ago and I found a job. It’s not my first job here in this café, I worked in 4 different places, even as a domestic worker, but I prefer working in a café or a restaurant. I am happy here for now, I have friends and a lover.”
